Reading Tarot Cards

There is no doubt that a tarot card reading, when interpreted correctly, can be very accurate.

The use of tarot cards is a tool that fills me with curiosity along with a sense of caution.

My first encounter with tarot cards came when I was at high school one day and I saw this guy playing with a regular deck of cards in the library. I asked him what game he was playing, and he said he wasn't playing a game, and invited me to sit down.

He gave me the deck to shuffle and laid out the cards on the table and started telling me about how my grandmother was sick (she was), my parents were looking to invest some money in the property market (they were) and that I would soon get my first real boyfriend, but it would be a relationship based on lust and greed. I thanked him for the reading, trotted off and forgot about it.

About a week later I saw the same guy doing a tarot reading for the boy I had a crush on. He was telling him various things, then he said "There is a girl who likes you, but she's keeping her feelings hidden." I froze. He then said "You will get into a relationship with her, but it won't work out."

This should have been enough for me to forget the idea, but no. I was a teenager ruled by my hormones and emotions. I learned the lesson for myself.

The first thing to do when you decide you want to read tarot cards is to decide on a deck. There are many different types of decks, but the Rider-Waite deck is always a dependable favorite. I personally prefer to use a normal deck of playing cards as the pictures aren't scary (I am such a wuss!).

When you get a new deck, spend some time touching the cards, playing with them and shuffling them and looking at the pictures. This puts your energy into the cards and in turn attunes the cards to your own energy.

If you are using real tarot cards, make a note of any thoughts and feelings as you concentrate on each one.

This will help you to develop your insight when doing a reading. It is important for the interpretation of the cards, as a reading will always vary in meaning from one person to the next. This isn't necessary if you're just using regular playing cards.

There are many different layouts for a tarot card reading, but my personal favorite is the Celtic Cross. I find that this layout is quick and straight to the point. It is detailed enough to pinpoint main issues and their underlying causes but broad enough to give you a full story, beginning, middle and end.

Shuffle the deck and place 7 cards as per the spread illustrated below:

The use of regular playing cards when doing a tarot reading is known as cartomancy. The meaning of the cards is below.

Please note: My belief is that the tarot reading is true for you in that very point in time. But you have the power to change your own destiny - nothing is ever set in stone.
