Seeing Your Purpose to Create a Goal
Your goal needs to be aligned with your purpose and priorities in life.
Some people know what their goals are, others don't. Of the people who do know what their goals are, some goals are reasonable, while others are not. Even if you believe that you know what your goals are, follow this exercise. It is very beneficial. | Public | Personal | Fun | | Sport | Abundance | Artistic Expression | | Professional Relationships | Health | Playing Games | | Work | Spirituality | Travel | | Career | Life Purpose | Entertaining | | Service & Charity | Sex Life | Trying New Things | | Lifestyle | Rest & Relaxation | Learn an instrument | | Possessions | Diet | Learn a New Skill | | Appearance | Homelife | Independent Competition | | Money | Love Life | Mastering a Hobby | | Socialising | Organising | Enjoying a Fun Activity |
Exercise: 1. Print out this table twice. 2. Take the first copy of the page and number each item in order of priority in your life right now. Feel free to add any extra items that apply to you and give them a number also. 3. Now, take the second copy of this page and order it in the way you wish it could be if there were no restrictions on you. 4. Using the second list, you are going to pick a goal from each category. Take the lowest number (ie. highest priority) from each category. You will now be setting three goals, one for public goals, one for personal goals and one goal just for fun. The words will form the basis of your goals. Think about an appropriate goal which relates to the word. This shouldn't be too hard as you have already highlighted the word as a priority. Now, before you go about saying "I don't have time for fun!" I want you to think about this: We spend a third of our lives at work, a third engaged in non-work activities and the other third asleep (if we're lucky). If all of your goals center on one category, this continues the cycle of imbalance. "So where does fun come into it?" I hear you say. I'll let you in on a secret: fun is the secret to a happy, healthy and wealthy life. Fun makes you forget your problems and lightens your outlook on life. Fun opens the door to success. Sleep is a fact of life - you can't get out of sleeping. In my belief, fun is as important as sleep. Ok - back to forming your goals. Take each keyword and create a statement that specifically identifies what you want. Make sure it is something you can start working on now, and give yourself a date to accomplish it. For me, my goals were as follows: Public: To obtain permanent employment by early 2007 (Work) Private: To buy a house in mid-2007 (Home life) Just plain fun: To travel to the UK and Europe in late 2007 (Travel)
Now you've got your three goals aligned with your purpose, it is time to move onto the next step,
planning your success!
