Trusty Tricks to Motivate You

So you've planned your goal, and you are motivated to achieve it. You've hit the ground running and you've built a good momentum.

Suddenly, an obstacle arises which distracts you. Before you know it, you've lost your momentum and you're declaring yourself a failure.

Oh no you don't! You don't get out of achieving your goal that easily. This is the most difficult part, maintaining your motivation and enthusiasm when the going gets tough.

I use three trusty little tricks which I swear by. These are: affirmation, visualization and gratitude.

Affirmation: Stick with one affirmation at a time. Make sure that the wording of your affirmation sits absolutely perfectly with you. Be clear and specific. Word your affirmation in the present, for example: "I am in my perfect, secure, well-paying job."

Make sure you believe what you're saying. Repeat the affirmation as often as possible - when driving, in the restroom, when bored at meetings, during tv commercials, in the shower, when cleaning, as you drift off to sleep. Before you know it, your affirmation will be reality.

Visualization: Close your eyes and create a picture of your affirmation in your mind. Make it bright, colorful and make sure there is lots of movement. Feel yourself as part of it and feel the emotion of the moment. At first your visualization will take some time to build. But before you know it, you will close your eyes and the visualization will instantly be there. It will feel familiar and comforting.

It's important to seal off the feeling when you've finished visualizing. Seal the scene in a bubble and release it to the universe. Then absolutely immerse yourself in the present and detach from your goal. Just accept that it is coming to you. If you distract yourself with thoughts of your goal during the day, you actually run the risk of doubting yourself. If you chase something too aggressively, it will run from you.

Gratitude: Without sounding too "Oprah" here, gratitude is an absolutely vital ingredient in manifesting a goal. Whatever you focus on expands. It is a natural law. So if you focus on all the good things in your life, the universe must respond by giving you more good things.

However, this rule also works in reverse. If your goal is to increase your income and you do your affirmation and visualization religiously yet curse your boss for being such a miser, you've undone all your work. So guard your thoughts carefully - they are powerful. Your attitude of gratitude will either make or break your resolution.

It is also important to celebrate your achievements - no matter how small. Celebration keeps you motivated!
