Don’t be alarmed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

The hospital anxiety and depression scale is designed for people who have a serious physical condition and may be suffering anxiety or depression as a secondary illness. It is different to the other anxiety disorder test and anxiety self test on this site as it’s evaluating stress and anxiety as a side-effect more than a primary condition.

People who suffer anxiety or depression as their primary illness would most likely find that the hospital depression and anxiety scale is a little out of balance. Indeed, it is a different type of anxiety scale, different to other anxiety tests as it doesn’t consider anxiety and depression as the primary illness.

Being sick can take a great deal out of a person, especially for those that deal with more serious conditions or diseases such as MS (multiple sclerosis) or cancer. There is no reason to be alarmed by this scale as the doctor is just trying to see what your level of anxiety or depression is. The patients have a primary illness but as a result of their primary illness they are depressed or anxious and this is one of the best methods for the doctor to rule out depression and anxiety as a secondary condition. The earlier the doctor can catch depression or anxiety disorders, the better off the patient will be and that is where the hospital anxiety and depression scale comes into play.

This test was created by Zigmond and Snaith in 1983 and is still widely used today is more than 25 countries. Many patients get that are undergoing this test get worried as they feel their doctor thinks that they have a psychiatric disorder but the doctor is actually just trying to see if the patients may need assistance in dealing with some anxiety or depression as a result of their primary condition. It is quite common for those going through surgery or some type of medical treatment to suffer with some depression or to have some anxiety over their current medical condition.

If you are suffering with a major illness such as cancer or HIV and your doctor has asked that you complete the hospital anxiety and depression scale, embrace it as a positive thing. Your doctor wants to be sure that you are handling things as you should be and if you’re not then he or she can get you the help that you need right away so that you do not become clinically depressed or so that you do not suffer with some type of anxiety disorder.

However, it is not designed for people who suffer anxiety or depression as their primary illness. It is designed for people who have a serious physical illness, and may suffer anxiety or depression as a side-effect of that illness.
